Simple Lanai Makeover Ideas for Summer Entertaining

After 10 years of loving our screened-in lanai, it was time for a refresh. Between Florida sun, pool splashes, and a certain cat who thinks everything belongs to him, our outdoor space was looking a little tired. But instead of replacing everything, I decided to do a summer-ready makeover—simple updates that made a big difference. A new set of cushion covers, some breezy curtains, twinkle lights, and lounge covers with actual pockets (game-changer) brought everything back to life. And the best part? Most of these updates took less than an afternoon.

If you’re thinking about getting your patio, lanai, or backyard ready for summer hosting, here’s a look at what we changed—and how easy it can be to make your space feel brand new again

💺 Furniture Refresh: New Cushion Covers for a Whole New Look

One of the biggest changes we made—without replacing any furniture—was swapping out our old red cushion covers for a deep blue set I found on Amazon. After 10 years of Florida sun, pool splashes, and more than a few washes, the original Sunbrella fabric on our rattan sectional was still hanging on—but just barely. It was time for a refresh, and these new covers did the job beautifully.

I ordered the 14-Pack Outdoor Patio Seat and Back Cushion Replacement Covers (fit for a 7-piece rattan sectional), and I was impressed right out of the box. The material has great strength and tear resistance, plus it’s splash-proof—perfect for quick cleanups when someone inevitably sets down a sweaty drink. They’re not fully waterproof, but a quick blot with a towel does the trick if anything spills. The clean stitching, heavy-duty aluminum zippers, and anti-slip bottoms were all pleasant surprises for the price.

The best part? I didn’t even have to remove the old red covers underneath. These slipped right over them. Even though our corner cushions are angled and the new covers weren’t a perfect shape match, you’d never know. They stretched just enough to fit like they were made for our set, and the blue added a calm, regal touch that totally changed the vibe of the space.

I also picked up some coordinating throw pillows (shown in the video), which sadly are now out of stock—but they pulled the whole look together when I scanned across the couch and chairs. It honestly shocked me how big a transformation we got from such a small change. The whole lanai feels new again.

🪟 DIY Outdoor Curtains: Instant Elegance & Sun Protection

I never realized how much character curtains could bring to an outdoor space—until we added them to our lanai. Not only do they help block that blazing summer sun, but they’ve completely changed the atmosphere. Now, our lanai feels like a private retreat—cool and shaded by day, and romantic and cozy by night (especially when the twinkle lights come on).

We used these Waterproof Outdoor Curtains for the Patio in Cream (54×108 inches), which came in a set of six panels. That was almost perfect—except the front opening of our lanai was just a few feet longer. I didn’t need another full set, so I searched for a single curtain panel that could match as closely as possible. I ended up finding a Biscotti Beige panel (52×108 inches), and thankfully, it blends right in. You’d never know they weren’t from the same set.

We hung the grommet top curtains using Rust Resistant, Easy to Install brown shower curtain tension rods and added Strong Magnetic Modern Rope Curtain Tiebacks in blue for decoration—which are surprisingly elegant for something so practical. When they’re open, they wrap neatly and stay in place even on windy days. And when we want that soft, enclosed feel? We just let them drop.

We often close one side during parties to create a more intimate vibe, and they’re perfect in spring or fall evenings when we have the fire pit going. But in the summer, they really earn their keep by blocking direct sun and keeping the seating area cooler and more comfortable.

🪄 Quick Tip: If your space needs just a bit more coverage, don’t be afraid to mix curtain brands, just stay close in tone and length.

✨ Twinkle Lights & Ambience: A Touch of Magic

Once the curtains went up, it felt like our lanai needed its own set of lights—something to make it feel more like a cozy, separate room rather than just a pass-through space. So, I added a second layer of twinkle lights, focused just in the seating area where the couches and chairs are, and I’m obsessed with how it turned out.

I found these Color-Changing String Lights on Amazon, and they’ve quickly become one of my favorite upgrades. They’re 33 feet long with 100 LED bulbs, and they come with 22 solid color options—plus 12 different lighting modes. You can set them to twinkle, blink, chase, stay solid, or even dim them to get the exact vibe you’re after.

And here’s the part that sold me: the remote control has holiday presets! There’s a red-and-green combo for Christmas, orange-and-white for Halloween, and soft pastel shades for Easter. It’s such a clever touch, and it means these lights are going to be a part of our space all year long, not just for summer nights.

Even better, I’ve already used them several times in just the past month—and they always make the space feel warm, festive, and a little more special. Whether we’re entertaining or just enjoying a quiet night with the curtains drawn and the fire pit going, these lights add the perfect finishing touch.

🧺 Lounge Chair Covers with Pockets: Style Meets Function

The last little update I made might just be one of the smartest: tie-dye style chaise lounge covers with built-in pockets. Not only do they help protect our outdoor furniture from pet damage (because yes, the cat has made a mess of a few chair corners 🙄), but they also add a layer of softness that’s actually useful.

I went with a 2-pack of microfiber lounge chair towel covers in a soft blue-gray tie-dye. The fabric is absorbent and comfortable—perfect for post-swim lounging or just soaking in some sun. The design is surprisingly clever:

  • There’s an 11″ deep pocket at the top that slips over the chair back to keep the towel cover in place—no more tugging and adjusting every time you sit down.
  • Four elastic corner straps keep everything secure, even when there’s a breeze.
  • And the three side pockets are honestly what sold me. They’re deep enough to stash your phone, book, sunglasses, and sunscreen—all right within arm’s reach.

They’re machine washable, fold into compact bags for travel, and have held up beautifully so far. I love that I can toss them in the wash, let them air dry, and they’re ready for another round by the pool.
