✅ Ultimate Summer Party Planning Checklist
Use this checklist no matter which party theme you choose. These are the essentials every host should have covered to keep things running smoothly:
Featuring:
- General Setup
- Comfort + Safety
- Fun Extras
A downloadable add-on for your chosen party theme is available below. It’s designed to complement the main checklist with theme-specific extras like decor, food ideas, and games

1. Water Wars Party
Remember squirt guns as a kid? I used to chase my kids around the pool with them when they were little—so much fun! If you went to school in Florida, you probably played Water Wars as a senior, too. This theme is full of nostalgia and a great excuse to bring out your playful side. Gather your crew and prepare to get drenched.
Theme Must-Haves:
- Squirt guns & water balloon kits
- Waterproof party signs & water barriers
- Towels, goggles, and buckets
Food Ideas:
- Snacks: Watermelon slices, ranch dip with fresh veggies, goldfish crackers
- Main: Grilled hot dogs or BBQ chicken sliders
- Sweets: Popsicles or DIY ice cream sandwiches

2. BYO Kiddie Pool Party
Everyone brings their own inflatable kiddie pool and sets up in your backyard—think of it as a mini-resort with personal cabanas! Keep it light and playful with themed snacks like watermelon carved into sharks, tropical drinks in cups with Parasol straws, and pool floats.
To take it up a notch, set out a few giant outdoor games like Giant Beer Pong, Jello-shot Jenga, or a competitive Corn hole contest. As the sun sets, keep the vibe going with a backyard fire pit like the 36 Inch Wood Burning Fire Pit with 2 BBQ Grills, with Lid & Fire Poker—perfect for roasting marshmallows or a late-night weenie roast with your favorite people.
Sweets: Shark gummies in blue Jello cups, pineapple upside-down cupcakes
Theme Must-Haves:
- Snacks: Tropical fruit skewers, guacamole with tortilla chips, shrimp cocktail cups
- Main: Pulled pork sliders or Hawaiian chicken kabobs
- Sweets: Shark gummies in blue Jello cups, pineapple upside-down cupcakes

3. Shot-“Cuterie” Party
This crowd favorite was one of our best parties last year! Guests brought food served in shot glasses or mini plastic cups. From oxtail soup and saucy wings to mac and cheese bites and tiny desserts, the creativity was off the charts. Only a couple guests brought alcohol shots, the real fun was in the food! We used for our Keylime dessert “shot”, these 5 oz Square Clear Plastic Dessert Cups.
Theme Must-Haves:
- Shot glasses or short plastic cups
- Mini Appetizer Forks and Spoon (When we had our party almost everyone forgot to bring something like this, so I am glad we had 150 of each on hand), skewers, and dessert cups
- We used a few acrylic risers to elevate the display—and while we didn’t get around to adding the LED lights that came with this, I can only imagine how dazzling it would’ve looked! It was the perfect setup to showcase all the creative “shots” our guests brought.
Food Ideas:
- Snacks: Caprese skewers, spinach dip in mini cups, bacon-wrapped jalapeños
- Main: Pasta salad shots or mini tacos in cups
- Sweets: Cheesecake shooters, brownie bites with piped whipped cream

4. Drive-In Movie Party (with Cardboard Cars)
This nostalgic summer setup is easy and adorable. Guests create their own “cars” from cardboard boxes, then relax with pizza, popcorn, candy, and sodas as you stream a summer classic outdoors.
How to Create It:
- Collect large cardboard boxes from appliances or warehouse stores (ask local stores for clean, unused extras).
- Cut out a wide opening in the top to fit your guest, and another large hole in the front for the “windshield.”
- Use paper plates or painted foam circles for wheels, and tape or glue them on.
- Add headlights using construction paper, glow sticks, or battery-powered tap lights.
- Let guests decorate their cars with streamers, paint, or fun stickers before the movie starts. Or for even more fun, ask your guests to create their own cars and bring them with them to show off before the movie (kind of like those car meets). Have a prize for the best-looking car or the sturdiest. 😊
Theme Must-Haves:
- Outdoor projector (I have this one on my wish list for our annual summer party) & screen. Perfect size with 4K Ultra D
- Cardboard boxes, paint & decor
- Candy display bins, popcorn machine, (you can rent this for a lot less, but if you throw a lot of parties like my family does it is great to have on hand,) and cozy blankets
Food Ideas:
- Snacks: Classic movie theater candy, buttered popcorn, nachos with cheese
- Main: Personal pizzas or sub sandwich trays
- Sweets: Ice cream cups, s’mores snack mix

5. Backyard Summer Camp (for adults)
Camp isn’t just for kids! Host a summer camp party complete with name tags, team activities, and backyard games. When each “camper” arrives, hand them a number—those with the same number are on the same team. It’s a great way to break the ice, especially if your guests don’t all know each other.
You can create custom inserts for the lanyards with your camp’s name (use your last name or make one up!) and add an activity schedule on the back. Think of this as your official summer camp welcome pass.
Field day-style games are perfect for this theme. Set up a tug of war, an obstacle course, a relay race, and a water balloon toss to get everyone laughing and competing. Add a fire pit with s’mores and camp-themed food for extra fun.
Theme Must-Haves:
- Name tag stickers & lanyards
- Capture-the-flag kits or Field Day games like 3-Legged Race, Potato Sack Races
- Mini fire pit, marshmallow skewers, and metal camping mugs
Food Ideas:
- Snacks: Trail mix bar, pigs in a blanket, deviled eggs
- Main: Grilled burgers or foil packet chicken and veggies
- Sweets: S’mores, dirt pudding cups with gummy worms

6. Backyard Fiesta
Spice up the evening with bold colors, tacos, margaritas, and string lights (these are my absolute favorite string lights!). This theme works for casual dinners or full-blown dance parties, and it’s easy to customize with festive flair.
Encourage guests to dress in vibrant colors—think embroidered tops, flowy dresses, guayabera shirts, or even floral headbands and sombreros for fun. The brighter, the better! Set the mood with Mexican or Latin party music and offer dance space if your crowd is ready to move.
You can buy fiesta kits with banners, paper flowers, and piñatas to instantly transform your yard into a lively celebration spot. Add a DIY taco bar and you’re guaranteed to have happy guests all night.
Theme Must-Haves:
- Taco stands, salsa bowls, margarita glasses
- Paper flowers, bunting, piñata
- Latin playlist and string lighting
Food Ideas:
- Snacks: Chips & salsa, street corn cups, jalapeño poppers
- Main: Build-your-own taco bar or carne asada platter
- Sweets: Churros, flan cups

Theme Must-Haves:
- BBQ serving trays & condiment holders
- Mason jars, gingham tableware
- Western photo booth props & straw hats
Food Ideas:
- Snacks: Deviled eggs, potato salad cups, cornbread muffins
- Main: BBQ ribs or pulled pork sandwiches
Sweets: Apple pie jars, cowboy cookies

8. Foam Party
This one brings the energy! Rent a foam machine locally or invest in a small one for the season. It’s great for adults who love to dance, play, and get messy. I went to a foam party a few years ago—it was held in a large area in the backyard and had side walls to keep everyone safe. There were probably 20 people in the foam zone, and we were slipping and swimming all over. It was a blast!
Just be sure to use a safe, non-toxic foam solution and check for slip-resistant surfaces to avoid any party wipeouts.
Theme Must-Haves:
- Foam machine (buy or rent)
- Outdoor speakers & non-slip mats
- Swimwear, goggles, and changing stations
Food Ideas:
- Snacks: Frozen grapes, pretzel sticks with cheese dip, mini fruit kabobs
- Main: Grilled hot dogs or pulled chicken sandwiches
- Sweets: Watermelon sorbet, ice cream cookie sandwiches

9. Backyard Water Slide Bash
I have three boys, and for each of their graduations, we always had a giant water slide on the side of the house. We’d invite the neighborhood kids to come down with their parents and enjoy the slide before the party officially kicked off—then they’d head back home before the real celebration began. (A gentle way to say, “thanks for coming early!”)
Now that my boys are in their 20s, they still love it. This past summer we rented a massive double racing slide—and the adults had just as much fun trying to beat each other to the bottom. It was hilarious!
The slide was so big that I called the rental company a week ahead of time to measure and make sure it would fit in the yard. (It just barely did—but it was totally worth it.)
For food, we served fruit skewers, popcorn chicken, and a punch my boys loved when they were little: rainbow sherbet, Hawaiian Punch, and Sprite. We made a big batch, and it was gone before the party was halfway over!
Make sure your yard is level, and always ask rental companies about setup, power needs, and cleaning fees in advance. Download the check list:
Theme Must-Haves:
- Inflatable water slide (rental or retail)
- Water sprayers, splash pads
- Towels, sunblock, and shade tents
Food Ideas:
- Snacks: Fruit salad cups, chips and queso, cucumber slices with ranch
- Main: Hot dogs or grilled chicken wraps
- Sweets: Popsicles, snow cones

10. Luau at Sunset
Classic but never boring! We hosted a luau for my oldest daughter’s birthday, and it turned out to be such a hit. At the entrance, we had an easel with a fun message that said, “Get Lei’d!” and a display of colorful Hawaiian leis hanging from hooks so guests could grab one as they arrived.
We decorated the pool area with a big balloon arch, which made for the perfect photo spot, and turned our outdoor kitchen into a full tiki bar—complete with a grass roof. Hosting this one around sunset really does give everything that extra tropical glow.
Theme Must-Haves:
- Tiki torches, leis, grass skirts
- Pineapple drink cups, tropical centerpieces
- Luau games & steel drum music playlist
Food Ideas:
- Snacks: Coconut shrimp, mango salsa with chips, pineapple skewers
- Main: Kalua pork or teriyaki chicken
- Sweets: Pineapple upside-down cake, coconut macaroons
